What 30M Water Resistance Really Means (And Doesn't)

Water resistance is the most misread specification in watchmaking. The number looks like a depth, so people treat it as one, and that is exactly how watches get ruined. A 30M rating does not mean you can take the watch thirty metres underwater. It means something considerably more modest, and much more useful to understand.
Where the number comes from
Water resistance is tested in a laboratory, in still water, at a constant pressure, on a new watch with fresh seals. The figure describes the static pressure the case withstood in that test. It is a pressure rating expressed as a depth, not a diving depth.
Real water is not still. Swimming, diving into a pool, or holding your hand under a running tap all generate pressure spikes far above the static equivalent. Moving your arm through water multiplies the force on the case well beyond what the number implies.
What each rating actually covers
- 30M (3 ATM): everyday contact with water. Rain, hand-washing, getting caught in a shower on the way home. Not swimming, not showering, not submersion.
- 50M (5 ATM): as above, plus brief accidental submersion. Still not a swimming watch.
- 100M (10 ATM): genuine swimming and snorkelling.
- 200M+ (20 ATM): the point at which a watch is built for actual diving.
The gap between 30M and 100M is not incremental. It is a different category of construction.
So what does 30M let you do?
Everything that happens to a watch during a normal day. Walking home in the rain. Washing your hands. Being splashed at the sink. Getting caught out without a coat.
What it does not cover: swimming, showering, baths, hot tubs, or holding the watch under a tap. Those are the four ways most people damage a 30M watch, and all four feel harmless at the time.
Heat is worse than water
This is the part almost nobody is told. The gaskets that seal a watch are rubber. Heat makes rubber expand and then contract, and repeated cycles degrade it. A hot shower is more damaging to a water-resistant watch than cold rain, even though the shower involves less pressure.
Steam is worse still, because water vapour molecules pass through gaps that liquid water would not. A watch that survives a swim can fog up in a sauna.
Leather straps have their own rules
The case rating says nothing about the strap. Genuine leather does not enjoy water at any rating. Repeated soaking dries the fibres out, stiffens the strap and eventually cracks it, the case can be perfectly sealed while the strap ages badly on top of it.
If a leather-strapped watch does get wet, pat it dry and let it air rather than forcing it with heat. That single habit adds years to a strap.
Water resistance is not permanent
The rating describes the watch when new. Gaskets compress and dry out over time, and a case that is opened for a battery change is only as sealed as the person who closed it. A watch that was 30M five years ago is not necessarily 30M now.
None of this is a reason for anxiety. It is a reason to treat the number as a description of ordinary life rather than a licence.

The one-line version
Treat 30M as splash-proof, not swim-proof. Take the watch off before water, take it off before heat, and dry the strap if it gets wet. Do that and the rating will never become your problem.
